From Acle United to Halesworth Town, a breakthrough with Lowestoft Town and becoming the first-ever Lowestoft Town Scholar — the past year has been a significant one in Luca Upton’s development as a footballer. The last twelve months have seen Luca take some important steps forward in his football journey. What began with a move into senior football at Step 7 has developed into regular involvement with a Step 4 first team, two senior goals, a Suffolk Senior Cup winners’ medal and, most recently, the honour of becoming the first player to officially sign for Lowestoft Town’s new Scholarship Programme. It has been a year of progression, opportunity and, perhaps most importantly, learning what senior football is really about.

The move into senior football

Following his breakthrough into senior football with Acle United, Luca quickly demonstrated that he was capable of adapting to the demands of playing against older and more experienced players.By September 2025, Luca had already scored five goals in his first five games for Acle, attracting attention for his performances and his ability to make an impact in the final third.His form also attracted national attention, with The Sun featuring his early senior-football performances.As the season progressed, Luca continued to gain valuable experience. Acle's match reports regularly highlighted his attacking contribution, creativity and ability to create opportunities for teammates.In October, during a 3–0 victory over Swaffham Town, Luca was repeatedly involved in Acle's attacking play, creating chances and providing the assist for one of the goals.The experience was proving invaluable.Senior football is different from academy football. The players are older, stronger and more experienced, and every match presents a different challenge.For Luca, the opportunity to learn in that environment was beginning to pay dividends.

A new challenge at Halesworth

At the beginning of 2026, Luca's development took another step forward.While continuing his association with Lowestoft Town, he moved into a new senior-football environment with Halesworth Town, playing at Step 6. The move gave Luca another opportunity to test himself at a higher level and against experienced senior players.It wasn't long before he began making an impact. One of the highlights came in the Suffolk Senior Cup, where Halesworth progressed to the semi-finals after a 3–1 victory over Leiston St Margarets. Luca played a starring role, scoring twice. The performance was significant enough to be covered by the Suffolk Football Association, with their match report specifically highlighting Luca's two goals. The Lowestoft breakthrough

The next opportunity came quickly. Towards the end of March, Luca was called into the Lowestoft Town first team. On 28 March 2026, he made his first appearance in what would become an extraordinary six-match run-in for the Trawlerboys. Lowestoft were fighting to avoid relegation from the Isthmian League North Division, and Luca found himself involved in a crucial period of the club's season. A first senior goal

On 4 April, Luca scored his first senior goal for Lowestoft Town. Lowestoft came from behind to beat Tilbury 3–2, with Luca scoring during the second half. The official Lowestoft Town report highlighted his contribution, while the match was also covered independently by Your Thurrock. Two goals in two crucial matches

A week later, on 11 April, Lowestoft faced another crucial fixture against Heybridge Swifts. Once again, Luca found the net.His 44th-minute goal put Lowestoft ahead, with the Trawlerboys eventually winning 2–0. The result was hugely important in Lowestoft's battle to remain in the division. And he was becoming an increasingly important part of the first-team squad.

Helping Lowestoft secure survival

Luca remained involved for the final two matches of the season, including the dramatic 4–1 victory over Brightlingsea Regent on 25 April. The win secured Lowestoft Town's survival.For Luca, it brought an extraordinary conclusion to his first senior first-team opportunity:Six appearances.
Five victories.
Two goals.
And a contribution to helping Lowestoft Town remain in Step 4.It was a remarkable progression from playing Step 7 football just months earlier.

A cup final at Portman Road

While Luca was making his breakthrough with Lowestoft, his time at Halesworth also ended on a high. Halesworth reached the Suffolk Senior Cup Final, which was played at the home of Ipswich Town, Portman Road. In front of a crowd of more than 900, Halesworth defeated Mutford & Wrentham 2–0 to win the trophy for the first time in the club's history. Luca was invited back to play the fixture and was  introduced at half-time and was therefore part of the Halesworth squad that lifted the trophy. Back where it all started

The summer brought another interesting chapter. Having completed his spell at Halesworth, Luca returned to Lowestoft Town and began preparing for the 2026/27 season. Pre-season even brought a meeting with his former club.Lowestoft defeated Halesworth 4–1, with Luca scoring twice. It was an appropriate reminder of how quickly things had changed. Only months earlier, Luca had been playing for Halesworth. Now he was back at Lowestoft, competing for a place in their Step 4 first team.

A new chapter: Lowestoft Town Scholar

Then came another significant milestone. Lowestoft Town announced that Luca had become the first player to officially sign for the club's 2026/27 Scholarship Programme. The announcement was particularly significant because this is the inaugural season of the new programme. Luca wasn't simply joining an established scholarship group. He became the first official Lowestoft Town Scholar. Now competing at Step 4

The biggest change of all, however, is happening on the pitch.Luca  is now part of the Lowestoft Town first-team squad for the 2026/27 season.He started the opening league fixture away at Grays Athletic, before starting again in Lowestoft's 3–2 victory over Fakenham Town. He then came off the bench against Mulbarton Wanderers. 2026/27 — Lowestoft Town First Team & Scholar

Now Luca is competing at Step 4 and has become the first-ever player to officially sign for Lowestoft Town's new Scholarship Programme.

The journey continues

There is still a long way to go.Football rarely follows a straight line, and the next stage will bring its own challenges. But the past year has demonstrated something important about Luca's development. Rather than waiting for opportunities to arrive, he has taken every opportunity to play senior football, learn from it and prove himself at the next level.From Acle United, to Halesworth Town, to making his breakthrough with Lowestoft Town's first team, the progression has been rapid.Now, at Step 4, the challenge is to establish himself.
